Abstract

Review of the problem connected with genetically modified crops has been made in this article. Number of facts which confuted the powerfully advertised priorities of GMOs are adduced.
The potential risks from the release of GMOs into the environment are considered: genetic pollution is an irreversible process, the spread of genetically modified organisms is not subject of the control аnd therefore there is not "safe" distance to their cultivation.
Some stages of development of genetic engineering technologies in Bulgaria are traced. The need of maintenance the restrictive nature of the law on genetically modified organisms is indicated.
