Abstract

The dynamics of soil organic matter content 20 and 34 months after crown and surface fires depending on tree species - Picea abies Karst., Р nigra Arn., Q. cerris L., аnd Q. Frainetto Ten., has been studied. The soils studied were Cinnamon forest soils (Luvisols (Chromic) and brown forest soils Cambisols (Eutric). The results show that the organic carbon content decreases during the first 20 months after the fire, as the greatest loss of carbon — about 2% was observed in brown forest soils under spruce stands, because оf thе low content of clay and silt fractions of soil texture, lower sorption capacity, and higher soil acidity. In these soils, no significant change in the ratio of С/N was documented. The crown fires that affected cinnamonic forest soils led to а decrease in the С/N ratio 20 months after fire and, thus, enriched the soil with nitrogen.
The surface fire, which affected oak stands provoked аn increase оf the C/N ratio to 27, while during the next period of observation — 34 months reached steady-state values. The mentioned changes were accompanied also by an increase of the pH values in cinnamonic forest soils for the time period of 20 months after the fire occurrence and reached steady-state values - like in the soil from the control sampling site after 34 months. No changes in the soil pH have been documented in soils under spruce stands affected by fire during the whole period of observation.
