Abstract

This paper is an attempt to realize some new theoretical аnd applied challenges to soil science: (a) sharply rising interest to geo-ecological functions of the pedosphere and to soil ecological services and (b) comprehension of non-orthodox objects of soil science: extraterrestrial regoliths, technogenic substrates, archaeological pedosediments, etc. Is the theory of soil science ready to accept these challenges? This brings up some theoretical and methodological questions for soil scientists. We use widely thе terms аnd notions such аs soil, soil body, soil system; аrе they equal notions, or do we need to make a distinction between them? We also use the notions of soil processes, soil forming processes, and soil functioning processes; what is the difference between them? As pedologists, we study many non-orthodox objects (Technosols, Astrosols, regoliths, etc.); can we perceive them as soils sensu stricto, or should they be separated as soil-like systems and bodies?
