Agronomic Availability of Lands from the Velingrad Region for Growing Hop Plants

A brief botanical characteristic and survey of agroecological requirements of the hop plants was presented. Climatic conditions and soil resources in the region of Velingrad were considered. The main soil indicators — particle size distribution, depth of the humus horizon and soil profile, organic content, soil acidity (pH) were determined according to the requirements of the crop. The climatic conditions in the studied region are suitable for growing hop plants. Fluvisols, Luvisols (Chromic), covering area of 1090.7 ha are most appropriate for growing of hop plantations. There are conditions for expansion and inclusion of new areas for cultivation of hop plants in the region of Velingrad. Currently hop fields are about 160 ha, but potentially suitable are much more areas.
