Species of parrots, distribution and description of the kept in Bulgaria as a pets
Keywords:
parrots, species, biological peculiaritiesAbstract
The main species of parrots grown as pets in our country are presented. Most common are small
and medium-sized species of parrots. Among the small birds prevaile Melissittacus undulatus, Agapornis roseicollis, Agapornis personatus, Neophema pulchella and Neopsephotus bourkii. The medium sized species in Bulgaria are predominantly represented by Nymphicus hollandicus, Psittacula
kramer, Pyrrhura molinae and Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae. Those of the big species are about
30%, predominantly Psittacus erythacus, Amazona aestiva, Ara ararauna, Ara chloroptera and Cacatua galerita.
Essential for preventing disease and raising healthy birds is knowing the biological characteristics
of the parrot species concerned, full nutrition, adding vitamins and good hygiene, avoiding stress factors, and banning owners from kissing birds on the beak.
