Abstract

Modern economics is an institutional theory. Most leading economists apply institutional ideas in their studies and analyses. After more than a century of development, institutional economics is now a well-structured theory and has already explained the main economic facts and processes. But the real world is dynamic. New economic phenomena appear one after another. The problem of food waste is a good example.
According to the international statistics, the volume of wasted food around the world is amazingly large and
fast growing. There is also a large number of various initiatives to stop and turn this trend. Some of them were
public, others private, or mixed, and many of them have failed or have been extremely expensive.
The main problem in building an effective governance mode in the area is that food waste transactions differ from most others. That is why our study starts with a deep analysis of the economic nature of these transactions – their critical dimensions, influencing factors, and surrounding institutional framework. Performing a Discriminating Alignment Analysis, we reached a decision that is the best according to its logic. Finally, our results are checked and validated by reviewing several successful attempts to solve the food waste problems in different countries.
