Abstract

Phenolic acids and flavonoids are secondary metabolites that perform a number of functions, some of which are related to stress and plant adaptation to different environmental conditions. In this study, the content of phenolic acids and flavonoids in Bulgarian oriental tobacco was studied in two consecutive growing years - 2023 and 2024, characterized by different climatic conditions, determining the need for different numbers of irrigations. A total of 19 tobacco genotypes were studied. A change of the phenolic acids and flavonoids content was found during the two studied growing seasons. Slightly lower temperatures and precipitation in 2023, combined with fewer irrigations, resulted in a higher content of phenolic acids and flavonoids compared to the samples tested in 2024. The conditions in 2024 are compensated by more irrigation during the growing season. This is one of the probable causes leading to a decrease in the content of phenolic acids and flavonoids.
