Abstract

The transition from individual pens to group calf rearing is becoming a key component of modern animal husbandry, combining economic benefits, improved welfare and opportunities for automation and monitoring. This article presents an overview of the scientific evidence and practical aspects, compares the advantages and risks of the two systems, describes modern technologies and offers specific recommendations for a successful transitioning. In conclusion, future research directions and management approaches are discussed to minimize potential negative effects on calf health and productivity.
